Summer work safe tips Posted or Updated on 15 Apr 2024

Over 80% of British prisoners in Majorca are former summer workers in the bar and restaurant industry.

Some were promised accommodation and well paid jobs, but the reality was very different.

Others fell quickly into debt with employers confiscating passports for ‘safe keeping’ and withholding wages.

This led to some getting involved in criminal activity, including drug dealing, and ending up in jail.

There are a few simple ways to keep you and your friends safe – follow our summer work safe tips.

  • Insist on a contract setting out your terms and conditions. Without it you are working illegally.
  • Ask to see the accommodation and find out the rent/costs. Do this before accepting as part of a job offer and get this information included in your contract.
  • Keep your passport. Don’t accept offers from others to keep it safe.
  • If someone has taken your passport and won’t give it back, report it to the Police. You can contact the local British Consulate for help and advice to get a replacement passport.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help, whenever you may need it.

If you are ever feeling vulnerable or uncomfortable with your summer job, contact Unseen to discuss your situation in confidence.

You can ring this UK helpline from Spain for confidential free advice about your situation or someone you are worried about.
